Project MARCH Homework Clubs kick-off for the school year

PM_Enrichment

Project MARCH Homework Clubs are kicking off for the new school year by holding family cook-outs and information sessions for parents and children. The homework clubs serve elementary school children living in Pisgah View, Deaverview, and Woodridge Apartments. Children participating in the clubs receive healthy snacks, academic tutoring, and enrichment activities.

Children First would like to thank everyone that generously responded with donations of money and resources to help replace stolen and vandalized equipment at our Pisgah View site. Thanks to your generosity, the Homework Club will open fully stocked and ready to help children succeed in school.

If you'd like to volunteer with any of our Project MARCH Homework Clubs, contact Lindsley Doddridge at 828-259-9717 or lindsleysd@gmail.com.

September's Champion for Children

Ms. Cathy Pollock

Cathy has chaired the Early Childhood department at A-B Tech since 1993.  Her leadership has made A-B Tech's programs among the best in the state. The vast majority of individuals working in early childhood in our region have taken classes at A-B Tech. The curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through early childhood in diverse learning environments.

Thousands of children and families through the years have been the beneficiaries of the rigor and care that Cathy brings to teaching and administering our programs. For all her many accomplishments, if you ask Cathy what part of the job she likes best, her face lights up and she talks about the children she interacts with in her many site visits. She simply loves children and wants the best for each of them

Every month, Children First's Board of Directors recognizes a community member for their exceptional dedication to children. To see past Champions for Children click here.

Advocacy Corner: Tell Congress to fund SCHIP!

This week, North Carolina Governor Mike Easley sent a letter to our Congressional delegation urging them to approve funding for the State Children's Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP). If Congress doesn't act soon, North Carolina will lose $165 million - the cost of providing health insurance to 82,500 children in our state. Governor Easley notes that without these funds, North Carolina's SCHIP will end by the end of the year.

While SCHIP was originally created with broad bi-partisan support in 1997, President Bush is threatening to veto legislation that expands the program - hurting fast growing states like North Carolina.

Children First supports our state's SCHIP and its recent expansion. We believe children deserve affordable, quality health care. Contact our Congressional delegation and ask them to increase funding for SCHIP - a successful and important program for North Carolina's children.

Volunteers
Children First greatly appreciated the volunteers from Roberts & Stevens that spent a morning weeding and digging in our community garden at the Family Resource Center at Emma. The volunteers from Roberts & Stevens were part of thousands of volunteers participating in the United Way Day of Caring across Buncombe County on September 6th. Children First is a United Way Partner Agency and receives United Way support for three programs: The Family Resource Center at Emma, Project MARCH Homework Clubs; and Community Outreach and Education.

Thanks again to the Roberts & Stevens volunteer crew! If you're interested in getting involved as a volunteer with Children First in any of our programs, please call Greg at 828-259-9717.
