Pictured are Project POWER/AmeriCorps member Anna-Marie Smith reading with Sam Duncan at Isaac Dickson Elementary School.

Children First/CIS of Buncombe County Project POWER/AmeriCorps members attended a reading workshop conducted by Kelly Schultz, a Project POWER Professional Corps member that teaches kindergarten/first grade reading at Isaac Dickson Elementary School.  The workshop trained all 19 Project POWER/AmeriCorps members in reading strategies for elementary and middle school aged students.  Members learned various strategies to work with students to help with their reading skills.  The activities are implemented before, during and after reading to help the students with relating pictures with words, reading comprehension, inference and putting the story into the correct sequence.  After the members were taught the various tehcniques they had the opportunity to implement the techniques with the students from Schultz's class.

Project MARCH Celebrations a Huge Success

Children First/CIS recenlty held its Project MARCH Celebration Kick-off's at its Pisgah View, Deaverview and Woodridge Learning Centers.  The kick-off's were an opportunity for the parents to come and register their children for Project MARCH, tour the facilities, meet the new Director of Project MARCH and the Project POWER/AmeriCorps members who staff the learning centers.  In addition, parents and children had the opportunity to meet the LEAF In Schools and Streets artists that will be working at the respective learning centers.
