Community Garden - growing
community and food
|
 The
Community Garden at the
Children First Family
Resource Center at Emma
continues to grow - in
many ways. We have been
fortunate to have
several volunteers make
generous investments of
their time and talent to
help plan for the
garden's maintenance and
expansion. Gustavo Silva
and landscape architect
Steve Wyda (Grafica
Designs) have been
instrumental in
providing the vision and
design for some
improvements. Steve
Butera, a Project Power/AmeriCorps
volunteer, brings
additional assistance in
the building and
volunteer coordination
for the garden.
They'll be assisted by
volunteers from Hands On
Buncombe County in the
coming months. Thanks to
Hands On Project
Coordinators Jennie
Eblen and Robin Stickney
for choosing the
community garden as a
project. Hands On
volunteers will soon be
seen weeding, tilling,
planting, and building
in the garden! As
always, the garden
benefits greatly from
Emma Elementary School's
generosity in allowing
its land to be used for
the garden. In addition,
five teachers at the
school have plots to use
with their students for
educational,
recreational, and
nutritional purposes.
We're very proud of the
community building that
happens around the
community garden. If
you'd like to learn more
and get involved we'll
have several work days
through next spring.

Children First receives
grant for adult education
|
Children First is proud
to receive an $11,200
grant for Plazas
Comunitarias from the
IME Becas Fund. The
grant will fund adult
education for immigrants
seeking to continue
their education. The
classes will be provided
through the Family
Resource Center at Emma
in partnership with Emma
Elementary School. We
were pleased to receive
this competitive grant -
over 170 applicants had
applied for these funds.
The Family Resource
Center at Emma provides
numerous adult education
programs aimed to
improve literacy,
parenting, and computer
skills for parents with
children. We firmly
believe that to improve
the lives of children,
we must offer supports -
like education - to
their parents. We offer
a variety of educational
programs in both English
and Spanish. For more
information contact the
Family Resource Center
at 828-252-4810.

October's Champion for
Children |
Ms. Jean Meyer
Jean is a dedicated
volunteer at the
Children First Family
Resource Center at Emma.
Thanks to Jean's
persistence at the
Resource Center, we were
able to secure donations
of yarn for our
knitting/crochet circle
meetings on Tuesdays.
Jean also never fails to
check on the clothing
closet and keeps it
organized and in great
shape. Jean also helps
in the community garden
and often volunteers on
Saturdays weeding other
garden plots and making
sure that we have what
we need to keep the
garden in good shape.
She willingly does
whatever we request of
her and recently brought
in school supplies and
office items for the
Family Resource Center.
Every month, Children
First's Board of
Directors recognizes a
community member for
their exceptional
dedication to children.

Advocacy Corner:
President Bush's veto of the
State Children's Health
Insurance Program stands
|
On Thursday, October 18, the
U.S. House of
Representatives fell 13
votes short of overriding
President Bush's veto of a
bi-partisan bill to expand
funding for the State
Children's Health Insurance
Program (S-CHIP). Rep. Heath
Shuler did stand for the
children and voted to
override the veto.
Unfortunately, other NC
Representatives chose to
stand with the President.
If Congress doesn't act
soon, North Carolina will
lose $165 million - the cost
of providing health
insurance to 82,500 children
in our state. Governor
Easley notes that without
these funds, North
Carolina's SCHIP will end by
the end of the year.
SCHIP was originally created
with broad bi-partisan
support in 1997. President
Bush and Congress will try
to negotiate another bill
for SCHIP, but it will
likely cover less children.
Please contact Rep. Shuler
and thank him for supporting
SCHIP.
