Project MARCH needs help
replacing stolen items
|
The Project MARCH Homework
Club at Pisgah View
Apartments was vandalized
and some items were stolen.
The break-in ocurred during
the recess between the
summer enrichment program
and the upcoming start of
the after-school program.
Stephanie Johnson, Project
MARCH Coordinator,
creatively used the
temporary boards placed over
the broken windows to
reinforce the positive
message that Project MARCH
exemplifies in the Pisgah
View community (see photo).
Following is a wish list of
items needed before the club
reopens. Please call
828-259-9717 if you can
donate or purchase any of
these items for the Homework
Club.
- Cordless phone and
answering machine
- Set of Motorola
walkie-talkies for staff
- Board games -
especially Mancala
- Sporting goods -

balls, jump ropes,

Local Rotary Club adopts Family
Resource Center
|
The Rotary Club of Asheville
- West, under the direction
of Vickie Gaddy, President,
decided in July to focus
their community service
projects on the activities
and needs of the Children
First Family Resource Center
at Emma.
In a recent statement from
the Rotary Club of Asheville
- West, the club noted: "We
believe that Charity begins
at home - and even though
Rotary has four distinct
areas of service including
international - Emma is a
project that we want to be
involved in. Our 27 members
are excited about this new
joint venture."

August's Champion for Children
|
Julia and Phillip Gibson
The Gibsons are long-time,
consistent supporters of our
Family Resource Center at
Emma; supporting its work as
donors and volunteers. As
volunteers, they enjoy the
personal interactions at the
Center. The Gibsons fondly
recall a Christmas volunteer
experience where they really
got to know a family they
were helping when they were
invited in for dinner and
sent home with fresh
tamales. They believe
wholeheartedly in the
programs offered through the
resource center and show
their appreciation by
helping out in any way that
they can. We thank the
Gibsons for their
generosity!
Every month, Children
First's Board of Directors
recognizes a community
member for their exceptional
dedication to children. To

Advocacy Corner: Some good
news for NC kids...
|
|
The state budget (HB 1473) was
passed by the legislature on
July 30 after lengthy debate and
negotiations. Included in the
298-page state budget were
allocations for three issues
that Children First advocated
for this legislative session:
increasing funds for the child
care subsidy; enacting NC Kids'
Care; and funding for drop-out
prevention via Communities in
Schools NC. To read the details
and take action to thank the
Buncombe County delegation for
their support of the child care
subsidy issue visit our

Team 10 will begin their
orientation next week -
continuing a great
tradition of service to
our community and its
children.
But you don't have
to be a fresh-faced
AmeriCorps member to
lend a hand. We need
a volunteer just
like YOU. Here are
two great
opportunities for
getting involved in
the coming weeks:
- Volunteer as a
tutor in our Project
MARCH Homework
Clubs. They will get
started with the new
school year this
fall. Call

- Volunteer to
help prepare food
boxes for weekly
pick-up at our
Family Resource
Center at Emma. Call
