Project POWER/AmeriCorps Education Award Only (EAO) Corps

Project POWER / AmeriCorps program EAO Corps is a unique, innovative service program for education majors at UNCA and Warren Wilson. This AmeriCorps team was created to support college students who are providing student education/enrichment activities as part of their required curriculum.  Each successful applicant will be an officially enrolled AmeriCorps member and must complete a minimum of 900 hours of service by July 31, 2012.

EAO Corps members will continue with all current college requirements while fulfilling AmeriCorps/Project POWER commitments.  Upon successfully completing a service year, members will receive an educational award of $2,675 from the National Service Trust.  This award may be used for qualified student loans and/or accredited institutions for up to 7 years.

AmeriCorps Requirements of EAO Corps members:

  • Complete AmeriCorps application and hiring packet
  • Attend a EAO Corps orientation
  • Provide academic enrichment activities to youth
  • Attend all AmeriCorps National Service Days (5)
  • Complete a minimum of 5 required AmeriCorps trainings
    • First Aide /CPR, Disaster Preparedness, Conflict Resolution, Culture Sensitivity, & Citizenship
  • Submit monthly AmeriCorps timesheets
  • Complete two performance evaluations, mid & end of year

AmeriCorps Staff Responsibilities:

  • Present AmeriCorps opportunity to eligible students
  • Complete hiring process
  • Provide 5 AmeriCorps trainings
  • Plan and supervise National Service Day events
  • Meet monthly with the group of members (5 of the 9 meetings will include the required trainings)
  • Facilitate performance self-evaluations
  • Remind students of due dates and deadlines
  • Final approval on all electronic timesheets

Possible breakdown of the required 900 hours from August 1, 2011-July 31, 2012:

175 hours Training-UNCA/Warren Wilson Classes-(Methods) and AmeriCorps Required Trainings

600 hours        Student Teaching-50 hours/week x 12 weeks (This includes 2 hours planning per day)

125 hours Possibilities:

-5 hours /week class observations in fall

-5 Required National Service Day Events

-Fall/Spring Break Trips

-Summer Camps on Campus

-90 hours other community service outside of AmeriCorps objectives

-Summer School w/ACS or BCS
